Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Well over two million grandparents in the United States have been identified as the head of household for families including more than four and a half million children under age 18 – the children of their children. This responsibility often occurs because of a sudden unfortunate event or set of circumstances involving the natural parents. It requires special coping skills for handling family crises involving three generations – themselves, their children and the grandchildren. The links in this note describe of the scope of this phenomenon, federal government benefit and foundation programs, a wide variety of information resource sites, state and cooperative extension programs and reports, policy and research articles, and legal issues for grandparents separated from grandchildren.
