Human Services Aging Internet Information Notes Grandparents Raising GrandchildrenWell over two million grandparents in the United States have been identified as the head of household for families including more than four and a half million children under age 18 – the children of their children. This responsibility often occurs because of a sudden unfortunate event or set of circumstances involving the natural parents. It requires special coping skills for handling family crises involving three generations – themselves, their children and the grandchildren.
