American Heart Month

When was the last time you heard music that made your heart sing or saw a heart- warming movie?

Celebrating life is what it’s all about. During February, American Heart Month, there’s plenty you can do to keep celebrating life by taking care of your heart.

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, taking these six key steps will reduce your risk of having a heart attack:

  • Stop smoking
  • Lower high blood pressure
  • Reduce high blood cholesterol
  • Aim for a healthy weight
  • Be physically active each day
  • Manage diabetes

Older American Act funded programs offer routine health screenings including cholesterol and blood pressure screenings in many local communities to people aged 60+.

Contact the Eldercare Locator to find local resources by going to www.eldercare.gov or by calling 1-800-677-1116 Monday through Friday 9:00 am –6:00 pm Eastern time.
