Assistant Secretary for Aging Carbonell to Address National Hispanic Council on Aging Conference

U. S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will deliver the keynote address at the National Hispanic Council on Aging Annual Conference on Thursday, November 1, 2007 in Dallas, Texas. Assistant Secretary Carbonell will be joined by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Deputy Administrator Herb Kuhn to kick off the 2007 HHS Hispanic Fall Medicare Open Enrollment season.

Background:

Assistant Secretary Carbonell will discuss national efforts to help Hispanic elders and their families live longer, healthier lives through prevention practices to help eliminate health disparities that exist among Hispanic elders. The Assistant Secretary’s remarks will also cover efforts to streamline access to long term supports in the community and advance consumer direction and choice. Assistant Secretary Carbonell will talk about the importance of establishing partnerships at the national, state and local level to further healthy aging and care for older Hispanic elders.

Assistant Secretary Carbonell will also be joined by CMS Deputy Administrator Kuhn who will preview the 2007 Fall Medicare Open Enrollment campaign which runs from November 15, 2007 to December 31, 2007. Called “Working Together for Better Health,” the effort to reach beneficiaries in communities across the country will provide essential information about the upcoming Medicare enrollment season, prevention benefits and Part D prescription drug coverage as well as efforts to provide extra help to those who may need it.

The National Hispanic Council on Aging is the premier Washington, DC based non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for Hispanic older adults, their families, and their communities.  The NHCOA Annual Conference “The Booming of An Aging Latino Population: Building Strategies to Enjoy Our Golden Years” will take place October 31 to November 2, 2007.
