U.S. Assistant Secretary for Aging to Address 2007 Florida Conference on Aging

HHS Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will address the Closing General Session of the 2007 Florida Conference on Aging on Thursday, August 16, 2007, in Miami, Fla. The Assistant Secretary will join Florida Department of Elder Affairs Secretary E. Douglas Beach, Ph.D., to share federal and state perspectives on aging and long term care. Carbonell will also announce additional Federal funding for the Florida Aging and Disability Resource Center which connects seniors, those with disabilities and their caregivers with information and services to assist them in planning for their long term care needs.

BACKGROUND:

Assistant Secretary Carbonell, as head of the national aging services network, is working to modernize the long term care system and provide greater assurance that older individuals in the United States maintain their independence in the community as long as possible. Assistant Secretary Carbonell will address the ongoing policies and efforts that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Administration on Aging are pursuing as part of that modernization effort. She will also discuss the implementation of the new long-term care provisions in the Older Americans Act.

The 2007 Florida Conference on Aging, entitled “It’s All About Change,” is presented by the Florida Council on Aging, the Florida Association of Aging Services Providers, and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
