AoA to Convene Choices for Independence:
A National Leadership Summit

HHS Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will be joined by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Acting Administrator Leslie V. Norwalk to convene the “Choices For Independence: A National Leadership Summit” on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 in Washington, D.C.

Nearly 1300 representatives of state and area agencies on aging, health and long-term care, tribal organizations, community-service providers and others will participate in this two and one-half day conference to spotlight best practices, partnerships and initiatives designed to help federal, state and local efforts to transform long-term care for the 21st Century.

The Summit will also showcase key components of the recently reauthorized Older Americans Act Amendments of 2006 (P.L. 109-365) which contains principles of the Administration’s Choices for Independence initiative which advance the President’s New Freedom Initiative and support HHS Secretary Leavitt’s priorities of prevention and value-driven health care.

*SPECIAL MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Carbonell and Norwalk will arrive on the My Health. My Medicare Bus at 12:30 p.m. outside the hotel. Since September 1, 2006 the bus has traveled over 60,000 miles to 111 cities participating in Medicare Part D enrollment and prevention activities for beneficiaries and their families.
