Assistant Secretary Carbonell Speaks at Challenge of Global Aging International Conference in Mexico

The Honorable Josefina G. Carbonell, Assistant Secretary for Aging of the United States (U.S.). Administration on Aging (AoA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will be a keynote speaker at the “Challenge of Global Aging” International Conference in Mexico, City, Mexico, which is taking place June 16-18 2004. Mexico is one of many Latin American and Caribbean countries in which the proportion of people 60 and over is likely to exceed the 20 percent mark by 2050.

The Conference will honor the 25th anniversary of INAPAM, the Mexican National Institute on Aging (INAPAM), within the Mexican Ministry of Social Development. Representatives from over 20 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe are expected to attend to discuss a broad range of global aging issues.

In addition to the keynote speech, Assistant Secretary Carbonell will convene a roundtable titled, Aging Well, Living Well: Opportunities in the United States on June 17. She will also meet with officials at the Mexican Ministry of Health to discuss joint aging-related activities between AoA and The Health Working Group of the U.S./Mexico Binational Commission.
