Message from Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee
National Diabetes Month 2009
President Obama has issued a proclamation designating November as National Diabetes
Month to support those who are battling diabetes as well as those who are working hard to
improve the prevention and treatment of this disease.
Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes,
which is the most common form of diabetes. Many more are unaware that they are high risk.
Some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes, such as minority communities and older
Americans. When diabetes is undiagnosed and untreated, the results can be devastating.
For people with Medicare at risk for getting diabetes, Medicare covers a screening blood
sugar test to check for diabetes as well as certain supplies and self-management training to
find and treat diabetes.
The Administration on Aging’s (AoA) national aging services network plays a key role in
serving older people and minority elders with diabetes. For example, in 14 urban
communities across the country with a high proportion of Hispanic and African Americans,
diabetes self-management programs are available to help people with diabetes better
manage their care. For more information about these programs,
