Celebrate National Grandparents Day on September 9th!
Mark your calendars! September 9th is National Grandparents Day. Make sure to honor your grandparents on Sept. 9th and throughout the year.
Grandparents play an important role in strengthening families. Since 1979, Grandparents Day has been observed every year in honor of our nation’s
grandparents with whom one in 10 of all children in the U.S. live.
ACL Programs Serve Grandparent Caregivers
2010 census data reveal that about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all U.S. children, live with grandparents who are the head of the household.
Also, a recent report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that extended-family caregivers are more likely to be poor, elderly, less educated and
unemployed compared with average parents. The Administration for Community Living funds the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCP),
which supports grandparent caregivers. The National Family Caregiver Support Program is funded by the Older Americans Act and offers a range of
services to support family caregivers, including individual counseling, caregiver training and supplemental services. For 2010, the NFCP served 17,520
grandparent caregivers. Regarding specific services, respite was provided to 2,942 grandparents and counseling of some type was provided to 10,527 grandparents.
