A Message from Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee

March is National Nutrition Month®, a time when we highlight the importance of nutrition and healthy eating. Good nutrition helps promote health, reduces the risk of chronic disease, manage conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure and enables older adults to remain at home, which is a top priority for the Administration on Aging. Many older adults are living longer, more healthful lives in their own homes but others, especially those with chronic health conditions, those who are poorer, those with functional impairments, and those with racial, ethnic, and language differences may be at more risk of losing their independence. For most of Older Americans Act Nutrition Program participants -- whether in the congregate or the home delivered program -- the single daily meal from this program is their major source of healthy food for the day. These programs provide healthy safe meals, opportunities for health promotion and physical activity, as well as friendships and social contact--all essential components of healthy aging.

We are proud to join our colleagues in the national aging services network in saluting all those who provide nutrition and nutrition services to older Americans and to support the American Dietetic Association in their efforts to highlight good nutrition during National Nutrition Month®
