Description
This video provides an overview of the Mobile Day Care program in the Central
Savannah River area of Georgia. Mobile day care is an innovative approach to
providing social day care in rural communities that may not have the resources
to develop their own, full-time day care center. Leaving each morning from a
central location, the program staff members travel with materials needed for
the day to a rural site. The mobile day care model allows rural communities to
have their own day care program by sharing staff and resources that move from
location to location. The video shows what an average day is like and is about
15 minutes in length.

This guide, produced
by the Los Angeles Alzheimer’s
Association, is a useful educational tool for those interested in volunteering
in day care centers that serve older persons with dementia as well
as the physically challenged or developmentally disabled. The Guide
provides an introduction to day care centers and the roles that volunteers
can play. The section on working with participants is useful both for
new and experienced volunteers working in day care centers. It offers
helpful suggestions and insights on ways to improve communication with
dementia patients, how to cope with challenging behaviors, creative
ways to set up and conduct activities, and symptoms of illnesses that
may indicate a medical emergency.
There also are chapters
on safety and emergency preparedness and interacting with caregivers.
The appendices provide a glossary
of terminology, a fact sheet on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related
Disorders, as well as suggested reading. Pages for note taking and
checklists relating to the various chapters are interspersed throughout
the guide.

This booklet contains a complete set of forms and letters
designed for use in a respite facility program. The forms range from
client intake forms to medication lists, health care directives, physician
order sheets, treatment records, and resident rights and responsibilities.
In other words, virtually everything that might be needed prior to
and during a respite facility stay.
The booklet also
includes an operational protocol to be used in assessing the client’s health and writing a plan of
care for the client to be used when he or she is in the respite facility.
The protocol delineates the roles of the facility staff in carrying
out the assessment procedures, and includes procedures to communicate
with and involve the client’s primary caregiver and physician.
The protocols include those for the clinic visit assessment, in-home
screening for the facility-based respite, admission to the facility,
and the actual respite care.
Arkansas Shared Kare Adult Day Services Training Curriculum
While this train
the trainer manual was designed for respite care instructors teaching
direct care staff in Arkansas, virtually
all of the materials can be used in any adult day services respite
facility that deals with Alzheimer’s and related dementia clients.
The teaching units--many of which are designed to be used in concert
with slide presentations--cover the physical changes that take place
during the aging process, personal care, the basics of dementia care,
and how to refocus challenging behaviors. The manual includes a pre-test
to gauge the effectiveness of the teaching modules. There is also a
section entitled skills exam which explains the steps necessary to
wash your hands, proper lifting techniques, how to perform transfers,
and how to teach a client to use a walker. The final section has an
additional test to determine the care staff’s grasp of the information
presented in the course.

This well illustrated training manual designed primarily
to train caregiving staff is divided into eight modules accompanied
by handouts that can be duplicated for participants . Some handouts
can be photocopied onto acetate and used as overheads during the presentations.
Module 1, like the
other modules, provides information for the trainer that can be equally
useful to a layperson studying
on his own. The module describes the physiological changes that account
for Alzheimer’s disease and the symptoms that are generally associated
with the three stages of the disease. The second module discusses problems
AD patients have with verbal language and their stronger reliance on
body language to communicate. The module offers useful suggestions
for communicating with and understanding AZ patients. Module 3 discusses
problems with personal care and how to deal with them. The fourth module
discusses ways to manage behavior problems. It notes that not all AZ
patients have such problems nor would some of the behavior associated
with AZ be considered problematic by all caregivers. There are also
modules on planning activities, family and ethical issues, and community
resources and a bibliography.
