Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities and Alzheimer’s Disease

There are around 9,000 people in the United States with an intellectual/ developmental disability and dementia. This number will only increase as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities age. Approximately 75% of individuals with an intellectual or developmental disability live with family members, which means that there will be growing numbers of caregivers for individuals with a disability and dementia.

The US Administration on Aging has developed two resources, a fact sheet and resource list, for caregivers of individuals with an intellectual/developmental disability and Alzheimer’s disease:
